About This Pipe

Todd Johnson is a pioneering force in American pipe making, renowned for his sculptural and highly original designs. With over two decades of experience, Johnson combines classic profiles with interpretive, artful shapes, earning a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and creativity. Johnson refined his skills under Danish masters Tom Eltang and Lars Ivarsson, immersing himself in the Danish approach to refined shaping and expert functionality. Johnson's work is characterized by organic, nature-inspired forms, reflecting his philosophy of allowing the briar to dictate its own shape.

His philosophy is beautifully displayed in this Vase design, a highly organic composition that showcases Johnson's talent for interpreting a block of briar. Dense plateau lines the top of the design, specifically along flared bowl and shank. The bowl rests on a flat heel, and the shank sits on a paneled spur, allowing this piece to stand elegantly without a separate stand. The bowl and shank are connected via a vertically compressed transition, which pairs the bowl and shank in an asymmetrical manner that accentuates the organic nature of the design.

The hand-cut vulcanite stem features a distinct disk, providing a solid foundation for the stem's sleek taper and gentle bend. Lastly, the bowl has been finished smooth in a traditional chestnut stain that highlights tendrils of straight grain along the bowl's flanks and specks of birdseye along the rim and heel. Overall, this piece is both highly organic and sculptural, artfully blending two prominent elements of the Danish pipe-making tradition. Stamped "Phalanx," this piece is so well executed that it earned one of Johnson's highest grades.
