About This Pipe
Todd Johnson is one of the most well-known and respected names in American pipe making. His experience spans over two decades, and his style is heavily influenced by his time spent studying under Tom Eltang, as well as his master's degree in aesthetics. Altogether, this has fostered a singularly unique approach to pipe making, as is evidenced by this Cavalier Blowfish. The piece is striking in its fluidity. The linework informing the shank and stand, from the foot to the stem's bit, shifts and flows in a manner that belies Johnson's precise craftsmanship. As for the bowl, the curve following from its top aft side down into the glibly pointed heel echoes the flow of the stand beneath, suggesting an astounding depth of intentionality on Johnson's part. Interestingly, when viewed from above or below, the pipe features a lot more angularity to juxtapose against the more graceful and fluid curves presented from the side view. Johnson also shows off his superb eye for balance in the linework, placing the bowl at just the perfect height on the stand to spread out the pipe's visual weight in a healthy manner. To top it all off, the stummel shows off an array of astounding birdseye that shifts and churns like the clouds of a storm. This is a unique piece from a legendary pipe maker that is not to be missed, and it promises to be a gorgeous centerpiece in a smoker's collection.
