About This Pipe
Few figures in Danish pipe making command the respect earned by Hans "Former" Nielsen, whose career spans more than six decades. After beginning his training at the renowned W.Ø. Larsen workshop, Nielsen eventually set out on his own, cultivating a style defined by graceful proportions, technical refinement, and an understated sense of elegance. Those hallmarks are readily evident in this beautifully rendered bent Dublin, which reflects the disciplined craftsmanship and balanced shaping that have long distinguished Former's work.
Possessing a jaunty angularity and an elegantly unfurling profile, this bent Dublin delights with its positively radiant shaping — from the domed, Calabash-like rim and forward-cant of the bowl to the slightly angled transition and the demure curve of the saddle — the form's profile captivates and guides the eye. Equally impressive is Former's renowned sensitivity to grain — an ability to study a briar block and reveal its most compelling qualities through thoughtful shaping.
Fanning tendrils of flame grain radiate across the bowl's flanks, their gradual expansion mirroring the bowl's own before terminating at rim populated with dense whorls of birdseye. The flame's conjunction with the birdseye is delineated and emphasized by a crisp ridgeline across the upper bowl, its sharpness in profile echoing the firm angularity of the shank-and-stem arrangement. A bright, lustrous finish dresses all the stunning grain on display, highlighting the briar's depth with a simple yet vibrant stain.
