About This Pipe

Todd Johnson is a pioneering force in American pipe-making, renowned for his sculptural and highly original designs that have influenced countless artisans. With over two decades of experience, Johnson combines classic profiles with interpretive, artful shapes, earning a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and creativity. A Yale graduate in aesthetics, Johnson refined his skills under Danish masters Tom Eltang and Lars Ivarsson, immersing himself in the Danish approach to both beauty and functionality in pipe making. Johnson's work is characterized by organic, nature-inspired forms, reflecting his philosophy of allowing the briar to dictate its own shape.

The Erotique is a distinct artisan pipe shape, absent from the traditional shape charts of historic French and English marques. Instead, it emerged from the modern artisan tradition, originally conceptualized by Danish artisan Jørn Micke. The form is explicitly anatomical in inspiration and has inspired a wide range of interpretations over the decades, becoming a celebrated and collectible design among pipe makers and enthusiasts worldwide.

Johnson's interpretation presents an especially organic take on this already fluid form. The bowl features asymmetrical flanks composed of two rounded, bulbous sections that meet to form a concave rim. An elongated, rounded shank flows naturally from the bowl, creating a cohesive silhouette that balances out the unique bowl. At the junction, a band of pale ivorite provides a subtle visual break before transitioning to a stylized cumberland stem with softly rounded shoulders. The stummel is finished in a warm chestnut stain, highlighting sweeping tendrils of flame grain along the flanks and intricate birdseye across the rim and underside.

Lastly, this Erotique is among the first pieces we have received since Todd updated his stamping. This new system reflects the early stamping approach used by Sixten Ivarsson, in which numerical codes conveyed specific information about the pipe for market transparency. The four-digit stamp is divided into two parts: the first two digits indicate the price in hundreds, while the last two denote the year of manufacture. Accordingly, this pipe, stamped "3525," was priced at $3,500 and crafted in 2025.
