About This Pipe

Muscular proportions and organic shaping cues abound in the work of Jeff Gracik, the artisan behind J. Alan pipes. Gracik's distinct combination of Danish and American influences is readily evident in this Fugu. This particular Fugu has a lot in common with his other renditions of the shape, but with a firmer, more architectural profile. For example, where many of his Fugu's shank faces blend into the shank's bottom with a connecting curve, this pipe's shank face comprises a separate panel from those making up the shank. The top end of this shank also has some of his Fugus' signature upward turn, but here it is much less pronounced. The shank's shape is defined far more by the six panels that also serve to separate different patterns of grain from one another. A short stem fits snugly into the shank face, and it forgoes the usual delphine arc that his Fugus' stems usually have. Its base echoes the asymmetry in the shank face.

A geometric, though still organic, asymmetry guides the eye through the pipe. As with many of Gracik's other iterations of the shape, the bowl's right flank swells more significantly than the left, and the panel of cross grain running across the middle makes a subtle leftward turn. At the back end of the pipe, the shank face is angled more to the right side.

As always, Gracik has shaped this pipe by following the natural patterns within the briar, with the ridgelines abounding throughout the stummel functioning to make the best of the grain by demarcating sections of cross grain from those with birdseye. The grain is really outstanding, too, with the smooth finish and auburn stain doing an incredible job defining the subtle intricacies hidden within the wood. This Fugu is overall an outstanding work of craftsmanship from the American artisan, sure to liven any discerning smoker's collection.
