About This Pipe

After touring with a rock band, Jody Davis discovered pipe making as a creative outlet, building on his previous experience as a luthier. His diverse portfolio, featuring both classic shapes and fluid Freehands, reflects his commitment to growth as an artisan, emphasizing on his website: "I never want to be complacent as a pipe maker. I believe I will always be working to become better."

This Acorn is a long composition with an eye-catching palette, enhanced by the use of various materials. In terms of shape, it features a lifted heel and a slightly pinched bowl, allowing the piece to be cradled comfortably in the hand. The bowl's shaping highlights the grain of the briar masterfully, with windswept flame grain gracefully ascending the bowl's flanks, while the birdseye covers the entirety of the inflated, soft rim.

The shank exhibits a distinctly Danish style, flaring neatly into a long accent of warm Cocobolo, which showcases attractive grain throughout. The tan vulcanite stem connects to the shank via a push-style configuration, the mortise adorned with a silver inlay. The stem is crafted into a half saddle that is beautifully bent to the bit and features sharp and soft expansion rings at its base, creating a stacked appearance at the back of the profile. The result is a strikingly contemporary design, rooted in traditional pipe making, that showcases Davis' deep understanding of the art.
