About This Pipe
Li Zhesong is a Suzhou-based artisan whose path to pipemaking began with a hobby of restoring estate pipes and turned into a full-time craft. Trained in architecture and urban planning, Li brings the discipline of his past careers to the shaping of briar, influenced early by his father's woodworking skills. Working with carefully sourced briar and vulcanite, he now produces fewer than 80 pipes annually, emphasizing meticulous attention to detail over volume.
This Acorn exemplifies Zhesong's refined style, offering a compact profile that sits comfortably as a jaw-hanger. The bowl recalls its namesake nut, with walls flaring dramatically from a pointed heel to a generous, rounded rim. A low-set transition appears to rise directly from the heel, while subtle cheeking accentuates the bowl's full, organic form. The heel features a small panel that allows the piece to stand on its own, making it an ideal choice for a multitasking smoker. A slender, well-fitted stem meets the round shank in a gentle arc, its shoulders perfectly aligned with the shank's dimensions. The stummel is finished in a warm chestnut stain that highlights fine tendrils of flame grain along the flanks, while the heel and underside display delicate swirls of birdseye.
