About This Pipe
Jody Davis is a man of many talents. In addition to his pipe-making pursuits, he is an award-winning musician with three Grammy nominations. As a carver of pipes, his distinct style drawing inspiration from Danish aesthetics and his high quality artisanship have propelled him to an exalted status in the pipe world and elevated the popularity of American artisan pipe making.
This asymmetric bent Egg from Davis is an excellent example of his remarkable skills, with shaping both subtle and thoughtful. Jody Davis shows off his ability to read the grain of various woods with this piece. The titular asymmetric shaping can be attributed to the way that the American artisan has shaped the stummel to place a gorgeous river of cross grain at the longitudinal middle of the pipe. The stem base is distinctly ovoid and oriented diagonally. What's cool about this is how Davis placed the cocobolo in such a way that its white and black halves follow the same diagonal orientation as the stem base itself, thus accentuating the flowing, fish-like motions of the pipe. In fact, if it weren't for the lack of a ridgeline around the bowl and a teardrop shank, I'd almost be inclined to call this pipe a Fish.
The bowl features some stunning plateau along its left flank, adding a pop of textural contrast and tactile intrigue. Furthering the in-hand appeal is the luscious curve underscoring the stummel, which will conform nicely to the palm. This is additionally a compact, shallow-chambered piece for fans of small pipes looking to add a quick smoker into their rotation. As with all of Davis's work, this asymmetric bent Egg has a lot of great things going for it. Its unique, well-considered shaping and convenient size make it the best of both form and function for those collectors of Jody Davis, or fans of American pipe making in general.
