About This Pipe
Chris Asteriou's style is marked by balanced proportions, clean lines, and elevated finishes. Asteriou also prioritizes function in all of his pieces — no doubt the result of his background in architecture and industrial design. Said background has positioned the Greek artisan for pipe-making success, and over the years, he has amassed an impressive portfolio ranging from practical, minimalist designs to highly sculptural pieces. With its sweeping, gestural profile and supple, graceful curves, this bent Egg falls somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.
The bowl ebbs forward, set in motion by the sweeping momentum of the shank-and-stem arrangement. With its plump walls, said bowl conforms to the palm nicely, and the neatly chamfered rim leads to a moderately sized chamber that's well-suited for a variety of blends and occasions. The graceful upturn of the shank and arching posture of the stem offer a comfortable clench, and their union is accented by a lovely band of Corian, which adds a solid pop of brightness against the contrast-rich, birdseye-beladen stummel. Personally, I haven't seen such a stunning display of birdseye in quite some time, and Asteriou has maximized it to great effect here, as well as the tight tendrils of cross grain that define the rim and shank. If you're in the market for a refined shape-chart classic with stunning finish work to match, this piece is sure to fill that gap in your collection — or hold its own among your other fine smoking instruments.
