About This Pipe

Lasse Skovgaard's connection to pipe making may be hereditary — he is the son of Benni Jørgensen — but his reputation rests squarely on his own accomplishments. Beginning at just 16 years old, Skovgaard trained at the famed W.Ø. Larsen workshop, studying under both his father and the legendary Teddy Knudsen. From that foundation, he has emerged as one of Denmark's leading contemporary artisans, known for refined shaping and impeccable grain orientation, qualities well represented by this bent Acorn.

This piece is a bold and expressive take on the Acorn, balancing fluid curves with angled lines. The bowl is substantial and confident, rising from a gently drooping, subtly pointed heel and expanding upward in smooth, swelling walls that culminate in a broad rim capped with natural plateau. A low, flowing transition draws the eye rearward into a sharply lifted shank, which in turn meets a steeply bent saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. Accenting the junction of shank and stem is a slender Ivorite band, its bright pale tone complementing pipe's warm palette.

As expected from Skovgaard, the briar is nothing short of exemplary. Lively flame grain climbs the bowl in harmony with its upward flare and continues along the shank, while dense fields of birdseye blanket the rim and underside. These intersecting grain patterns lend remarkable visual depth, all brought into sharp relief by one of Skovgaard's signature smooth finishes, rendered here in a warm ochre-and-black stain.
