About This Pipe
Precision, balance, and a keen eye for maximizing grain — these are just some of the talents demonstrated by Hans "Former" Nielsen. Having dedicated over six decades of his life to the art of pipe making, Former has amassed a truly astounding portfolio and developed a style that is completely and unmistakably his own. This bent Dublin is a gorgeous specimen from the accomplished artisan, replete with all the hallmarks of his work: stunning grain, compositional balance, and excellent engineering.
From stem to rim, the entire piece is framed by a graceful, flowing curve. Said curve starts out swift, established by the flaring Dublin bowl, and mellows out through the subtly sinuous shank-and-stem arrangement. This flowing sense of movement lends the piece a graceful, elegant appearance, which is furthered by the briar's gorgeous grain and the lovely finish that accentuates it. Straight grain engulfs the walls of the bowl while the undulating rim is adorned with a crown of craggy plateau that adds a touch of rugged organicism. Tight swirls of birdseye trail along the top and bottom of the shank, entrancing the eye. The confluence of the briar's grain with stummel's shaping is impeccable; it's so seamless, it almost appears as if the briar somehow grew this way naturally. A rich, smooth, auburn finish draws out every fine detail of the lovely grain, and a subtly bent stem of jet-black vulcanite tops things off for a timeless look.
