About This Pipe
Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2025, the theme of our Expo is "In Memoriam," celebrating the life and works of artisans who have passed on, yet whose impact on the craft and those around them is utterly undeniable.
David Huber is a renowned American artisan pipe maker celebrated for creating highly functional smoking instruments that embody exceptional craftsmanship and artistic insight. His work is marked by meticulous attention to detail, innovation, and a deep respect for tradition. Huber often explores the boundaries of pipe design, crafting unique shapes inspired by legendary artisans while also showcasing his own distinct artistic voice. For the 2025 Global Pipe Expo, he presents us with this striking Mushroom in tribute to the highly influential pipe maker Lars Ivarsson.
The story behind Huber's inspiration may be familiar to a lot of pipe smokers. Huber was browsing through a display of pipes in a book, just like countless enthusiasts have done over the years — before the days of online shopping, of course. But this was not an everyday pipe magazine; this book was a copy of An Ivarsson Product: Three Generations of Ivarsson. As the title suggests, it features stunning pipes made by Sixten Ivarsson, Lars Ivarsson, and Nanna Ivarsson, all of whom are influential figures in their own right. It was a particular Mushroom made by Lars Ivarsson that captivated Huber and ignited his desire to recreate it. Having had the honor of seeing that iconic image myself, I can confidently say he executed it flawlessly.
Each member of the Ivarsson family has left an indelible mark on the world of pipe making. In Huber's tribute Mushroom, several features stand out as signatures of Lars Ivarsson's distinctive design language. The overall shape is highly organic, true to its namesake, with a naturalistic flow that is most apparent in the bowl's contours. One of the most recognizable elements is the iconic Ivarsson teardrop shank, which is clearly visible in the pipe's profile. Along the sides of the shank, Huber juxtaposes two kinds of line: a sharp ridgeline and a supple, flowing curve — another nod to Lars' dynamic shaping style. The rear profile extends that influence even further, carrying it into the stem base, which mirrors the silhouette of the teardrop shank. The strong sense of movement throughout the entire piece — a hallmark of masterful shaping — feels like an unmistakable nod to Ivarsson. That said, many seasoned collectors and smokers may recognize this immediately as a work inspired by Lars.
The Ivarsson family is also known for pioneering shapes that beautifully showcase the briar's natural grain, and this tribute piece stays true to that tradition. Along the bowl's flanks, straight grain follows the flare of the bowl and continues seamlessly through the shank. Meanwhile, the rim and underside of the stem reveal clusters of birdseye. These swirling patterns create a stunning visual effect — almost as if the straight grain flows directly into a sea of motion, culminating in a concentrated bloom of birdseye. With this tribute's evocative shaping and flawless grain, Huber captures the essence of Lars Ivarsson's design language and honors his lasting influence on the craft.
