Partially Sandblasted Origami with Juma and Bakelite Tobacco Pipe

Few people have had a greater impact on the pipe-making world than Todd Johnson. He was among the first American carvers to learn the Danish style of pipe making and popularize it among his peers, passing that knowledge on to many budding artisans over the years. While Todd has remained a champion of the Danish carving style, he has taken that foundation and transformed it into an aesthetic that is distinctly his own — one that is certainly on display here with this striking Origami.

The Origami is a signature shape of Todd's that we have seldom seen here at Smokingpipes, making this eye-catching design all the more special. This particular iteration boasts a Skater-like profile, but with much more fluid, organic curves throughout. The fore, for instance, curves inward before jutting out at the pointed, chin-like heel, and the rim is subtly inflated while also framed by crisp ridgelines that lend it a lenticular shape when viewed from above. The incredibly distinctive bowl is joined by a short yet sweeping stem, which is accented by a trim band of sky-blue Bakelite. A cream-colored Juma stem tops off the composition, its steeply slanted, curved shoulders adding another flourish of fluidity and precision to the composition. Showcasing attractive grain throughout, the stummel wears a lively auburn stain and a partial sandblast for a pleasing juxtaposition of textures. All in all, with its gentle, organic curves and crisp sense of line, this piece brilliantly captures the essence of both origami and Todd Johnson's unmistakable style.
