About This Pipe
Dunhill's "01" is the archetypal Apple shape, an outline whose most distinguished feature is its plump, curvaceous bowl. This particular iteration of the shape is a Group 5 piece with a good deal more robustness about its build than is average, though it still maintains a handy, convenient size to make it an ideal companion at all times. The transition is wide here and leaves plenty of room to drape a digit, giving way to a straight, cylindrical shank met by a sleekly tapering vulcanite stem. A defined forward cant lends the bowl a sense of dynamism while accentuating its contours, the added substance of the pipe's Group 5 size giving the stummel more room to showcase the crisp sandblast and earthy stain of the Cumberland finish.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
