About This Pipe
Dunhill's shape chart has come to be recognized as one of pipe making's most beloved, encompassing a wide variety of profiles that each embody a timeless character. The "34" is a seldom seen member of the White Spot's standard shape selection, its outline a neatly-lined Brandy that becomes quite muscular in larger size designations. This "4134" showcases the shape here wonderfully, its bowl supported by a broad, plump waistline set near the heel, marking the start of the walls' easy taper up toward the rim. A wide transition gives way to a lengthy, low-set, ovoid shank that's here paired to a tapering stem, the jet black vulcanite matching well the dark sandblast of the Shell Briar series.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
