About This Pipe
In addition to drawing upon the Danish school of design, Germany-based artisan Ken Dederichs combines the pipe-making styles of his home country, Japan, with his current country of residence; the result is fine smoking instruments with an eclectic yet one-of-a-kind aesthetic. This Blowfish is an excellent representation of Dederichs' unmistakable style, and offers a refreshing take on the classic shape.
Many Blowfish possess a plethora of ridgelines that frame the flanks of the bowl and wrap around the composition, often diverging and converging for a complex, dynamic appearance. This Blowfish, however, is slightly more minimal, yet all the more impactful because of this stylistic choice from Dederichs. The left flank of the bowl is encircled by a single crisp ridgeline, while the right flank is completely round, much like a Tomato or an Apple in profile. The rim is subtly concave, and quite crisply chamfered. Altogether, the bowl looks quite striking paired to the flaring, almost mushroom-like shank that emerges from the cheeked transition with rigid posture. The shank is joined by sleek, tapered, vulcanite stem adorned with a single slender expansion ring near the base, and it meets the shank face within the confines of an elegant brass inlay that adds a subtle dose of flash to the piece.
In terms of finish, this Blowfish wears a dark, smoky sandblast that remains relatively low-profile but nonetheless impressive in terms of clarity, granting just the right amount of definition to the briar's handsome grain while preserving the integrity of the stummel's unique silhouette. Only the slender rim and the domed shank face remain smooth; they are accentuated by a warm ochre stain and a glossy sheen that add a fetching pop of contrast to this pipe's otherwise dark and subdued color palette.
