About This Pipe
Larry Roush has always worked with his hands; before carving pipes, Roush found a career as a silversmith and jeweler, and those skills came in handy when he affixed metal accents to his personal collection of pipes. Eventually, Roush began to carve briar as well, and learned the ins and outs of pipe making from Mike Butera. Roush describes himself as his own worst critic — if he would not keep the pipe for himself, it's not good enough for anyone else. Other than his exquisite silver and gold accents, Roush is known for his brindled vulcanite stems, perfectly engineered airways, exquisite sandblasts, and muscular shaping style.
Larry Roush infuses almost all of his pipes with a muscular aesthetic, however, this oversized bent Apple is a cut above the norm. Measuring in at exactly over five-and-a-half inches, this compact piece weighs an astonishing quarter-pound. The majority of that weight is centered at the spherical bowl, which fills one's hand with a pronounced heft. Out back, the transition is exceptionally broad, but the shank quickly tapers to a trim form, joining to the tapered stem of brindled vulcanite at a slim silver band, a signature Roush accent. Additionally, the stummel is dressed in a unique finish, a rustication and a sandblast. Roush first rusticates the pipe into a craggy, dimpled pattern, and then sandblasts the surface, creating an exceptionally rugged texture that oozes organic appeal.
