Partially Sandblasted Mini Bulldog with Bone Tobacco Pipe

Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but as a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2026, the theme of our Expo is "The Art of the Sandblast," celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of the most meticulous finishing techniques in pipe making. Through the sandblast, these artisans transform the natural grain of briar into textured works of art, highlighting the unique character of each block and demonstrating the artistry of the technique.

Known for her refined, precise line work and crisp, faceted style, Manduela Riger-Kusk elevates the aesthetic principles established by her mentor, the late Poul Ilsted. The elder Dane was known for his architectural, paneled pipe designs, and Manduela carries that style into her own work, embellishing and evolving it through her own creative interpretation.

Fittingly showcasing her refined Danish style and architectural prowess, Manduela is particularly known for her signature Bulldog shape. It's no wonder, then, that she chose this familiar form for our 2026 Expo: a petite Mini Bulldog. The shape showcases Manduela's precision within the craft, evident not only in the clean lines of such a small form but also in the finish — a light Danish-style sandblast.

One of the most alluring aspects of this piece is its ability to carry so much detail in such a small form. The entire profile measures slightly over four and a half inches in length and features an appropriately compact chamber that contributes to its lightweight form. The bowl features the shape's characteristic beadlines; one beadline demarcates the bowl's waist, while the other sits slightly above it, drawing greater attention to the architectural aspects of the form.

Calling back to this Expo's theme, the stummel is finished in a light sandblast that highlights stacked growth rings along the bowl's flanks, while the underside features speckles of lightly blasted birdseye. This grain is dressed in a deep stain, with the rim finished smooth in a warm chestnut stain. Completing the piece is a pale bone accent at the junction, its light hue adding a subtle touch of brightness to the palette. Altogether, this is a masterfully executed piece from Manduela — a piece that leaves one marveling at how she managed to showcase such a stunning array of grain in such a small format.
