Nanna Ivarsson: Smooth Bent Apple with Boxwood (1924) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-361-0139

Nanna Ivarsson is a third-generation master pipe maker whose work is renowned worldwide for its phenomenal smoking qualities and singular interpretation of the Danish style, informed by the stylistic advancements of her father and grandfather and focused through an aesthetic lens entirely her own. Many of Nanna's pipes feature strikingly robust shaping, with thick builds and hearty bowls often showcased within her portfolio. This bent Apple is a notable outlier among those pipes, maintaining plenty of substance to appreciate, though within reserved dimensions that keep it handy and portable. The visual weight of this pipe is extremely well-balanced, the plump bowl situated at the fore being countered by a shank that flares consistently as it reaches toward the junction. A wide transition gives way to this shank, presenting a compressed, ovoid shape whose flare is apparent from both the flanks and the smoker's perspective. The junction is marked by a softly inflated band of boxwood that Nanna has subtly carved with an understated indentation at the face, allowing the base of a demurely curved saddle stem to nestle in nicely. A firm expansion ring at the base of this stem creates some negative space at the junction and draws the eye toward the aft, further balancing the presence of the bowl and highlighting the softly sinuous curvature that flows through this pipe's silhouette.

Up front, the bowl rests atop a subtly lifting heel, its plump shaping informed by the trajectory of the shank and stem combination and providing a reserved emphasis on the bowl. Thick walls rise from the heel, forming a mid-set waistline as they surround a capacious chamber and display an arcing taper to the inward-sloping rim, making for a supple feel in hand as they cant forward gently. There's a lilting gracefulness possessing the entirety of this pipe's profile, the stummel's easy fluidity leading the eye naturally along its soft contours and urging the eye to appreciate the incredible grain this pipe showcases. Dressed in a warm contrast stain and smooth finish, the stummel here is wrapped by a band of continuous flame, one that flanks the shank and surrounds the bowl, framed by dense basins of birdseye at the top and underside alike.
