About This Pipe
Sicilian brothers Elio and Guido Rinaldo moved to Pesaro and started working with Mastro de Paja in the mid-1970s, founding their own titular brand in 1987. They produce about 1,500 pipes a year using briar from Liguria in northwestern Italy, and grade them from one to four Y's, or the highest grade, Fiamatta, denoting excellent flame grain.
This YY-graded Tomato from Rinaldo features a rustication across almost the entire stummel that is irresistible to the touch, at once smooth on the surface and craggy in the ridges underneath. The walls of the bowl are typically round for this particular shape, giving it a substantial feel in the hand, and the upturned shank is ovoid with subtle ridgelines on the flanks to give the piece a nice sense of balance. A tapered stem of black acrylic finishes the piece, which will serve any collection of Rinaldo or Italian pipes quite well.
