About This Pipe
Looking at this Smooth Volcano, could it have come from any other carver? It starts with many elements of a traditional Volcano, but like its geological namesake, the asymmetrical begins. The rim follows a gentle ellipse, the straight grain "lava" spilling down, its pathway determined by an unseen gravity. Looking at the flattened plane on the left of the volcano, it is clear that it is not Toku-san's traditional use of implied space; allowing the logical portion of the mind to complete the presentation. Rather, for the first time, we see a composition materialize "from" the void, and the effect, to me, is astounding.
