Lane Limited - 1-Q
A Consistent Classic
I have smoked a pipe for about 16 years now and amazingly, I hadn't tried 1Q until now! I would often hear 1Q come up in conversation used as a marker or understood point of reference. Often touted as a great beginner blend. I felt a little left out every time someone would use 1Q as a reference, so I figured I'd finally give it go. Out of the bag it smells very good! To me, it smells like marshmallows or like a vanilla w/ light caramel. It was a little wet/moist so I expected that it would be difficult to light and have that artificial casing taste that other "beginner"/drugstore aromatics have, but was pleasantly surprised. It is easy to light, and stays lit and did not have that strong artificial/chemical taste. Vanilla/caramel flavor is present and tobacco flavor is very light. I really expected more of a bite from this blend, but it really wasn't a problem for me. The tobacco burned to a nice white ash and did not leave the pipe bowl overly sticky. All in all I can see why this blend is as popular as it is. It tastes good, smells good, inexpensive, better than any other drugstore blend, and nearly as accessible/available to folks. I was pleasantly surprised by this classic blend and I will likely always have a bit on hand for light smokes and for social gatherings.
Cornell & Diehl - Green River Vanilla 2oz
Good flavor, but too much cleanup
Going off of flavor alone this is one of the best vanilla aromatics period. The vanilla is present without overwhelming the flavor of the tobacco. As others have stated, it is oily/wet when you open the tin and you must dry for 20 - 30 minutes. Surprisingly once you get it going it needs average or less than average number of relights. It crackles here and there (which I actually find is kind of pleasant) but it keeps burning nicely. Now for the not so good side of this blend. This blend is so so SO sticky. It gums up the sides of the pipe bowl and even collects/sticks to my pipe tamp! When I smoke this blend I always have to keep a paper towel handy to wipe of my tamp after each tamping. When cleaning afterwards pipe cleaner fluff loves to stick to the goop along the walls in the pipe and it is a PITA to get it all cleaned out. My advice, give this one a try, and determine for yourself if the delicious flavor is worth the pain of cleanup. For me, it just isn't. Maybe find a cob you are kicking around that you don't smoke much and make that your Green River Vanilla pipe.
