The Luciano 30
Ten years and some change ago, Luca di Piazza was working on a project that involved pipe design for a third party, when there came along into his head a Pot that just stuck with him. The shape was never realized for that project, but it didn't wind up on the cutting room floor, either. He saved his original sketches instead for, as he put it, a better day — tucked away safe in his desk drawer.
The concept was 55-ish, as in akin to the Castello "55," but instead of seeking to reinterpret that shape in look (as many others have done, many times over) he was instead seeking more to create something functionally similar: a broad but handy Pot, thick-walled, and with similar smoking qualities.
Now, all these years later, he has his own brand and workshop turning out hand-made pipes from hand-selected Italian briar, in the form of the post-refresh Luciano. That better day has come, and with it, so has the Luciano 30: the final material form of that idea Luca put away for safekeeping over a decade ago.
