About This Pipe Tobacco

Metropolis Flake marks the fifth release in G. L. Pease's celebrated Zeitgeist series — a refined English flake crafted with layered complexity. Matured Bright and Red Virginias form the foundation, offering a natural sweetness. Italian Dark-Fired and semi-fired Kentucky introduce a savory richness beneath the surface, while St. James Perique lends a measured peppery character. A touch of Turkish Latakia threads through the blend with soft, earthy depth. Together, these tobaccos unfold in harmonious layers, delivering a contemplative smoke that is complex, yet balanced.

actually said that aloud when started my first bowl of this. been smoking it all weekend and it is right up my alley, as i'm a big fan of red VA and DFK blends. starts off with that deep red VA brown sugar sweetness poking through a smooth, mellow earthy smoke. perique comes through in the retrohale and towards the bottom of the bowl with supporting spice. overall smooth and soft as cashmere; even the flake feels soft and fluffy. smoked out of a 1932 dunhill patent billiard, as it seemed appropriate for the blend inspiration. another one that i plan to cellar, but will have a hard time keeping my hands off....Read More
Hard to categorize and extremely interesting

Now that I’m about halfway through a tin of Metropolis, I feel like I can finally offer a fair assessment.

This is a tough blend to pigeonhole. It seems to shift and evolve throughout the smoke, which is one of the things I enjoy most about it. There’s a bready, lightly smoky foundation, but
the supporting flavors are constantly moving between baking spices, a little pepper, and occasional sweet notes that come and go.

The one thing that stays consistent for me is a distinct floral quality along with a tangy, almost zesty character that keeps the blend engaging from the first light to the bottom of the bowl. Every few puffs I seem to pick up something a little different.

Given the Virginia-heavy composition, I think this blend has excellent aging potential and should become even more interesting with a few years in the cellar.

If you’re a fan of lightly peated, floral Scotch, there’s a good chance you’ll appreciate what Metropolis brings to the table. It’s a unique blend that’s well worth trying.

Spicy young thing

Relatively strong right from the start. Unusual for a GLP blend, this one taste young to me. Rough edges. I bought 3 tins . 2 will sit for 5 years. Overall the blend, recreates a similar experience to oriental forward blends, with perique to further advance the pepper aspects.
Mellow and sweet

Smooth earthy sweetness, perique is present but hard to detect, Latakia is very much in the background. I’ll give this one some age and try again. Pleasant but there are others I prefer when looking for a similar experience
Not an English blend

I know its labeled an English, but it doesn't smell like, nor smoke like an English. With that said, the tin note smells amazing. Notes of hay, bbq smoke, wood, earth and smoky camp fire come through in order of strength. Its a nice, well rounded, complex smoke that defies labels. As stated its definitely not an English blend, but its unlike any Virginia blend I've smoked. The VA's play the lead with notes of hay, toast and almost baked goods. Further back in the background they give off very subtle floral notes. The Italian Dark Fired comes in next providing a good bbq smoke and an earthy, woody character. The Latakua and Semi Fired play a supporting role with very light notes of Smoky camp fire and this herbal/vegetal green pepper, or clove style spice. Can't put my finger on that herbal/vegetal note yet. Overall its blended exceptionally well and its a complex, hard to define blend. Gregory Pease never seems to disappoint though and its another amazing, high quality blend in his line up....Read More
