This was my go to daily smoke when I was in my mid 20s half a century ago. I actually collected the coupons and ordered their imitation Delft tobacco jar which I had until just a few years ago. I was pleased to find that Sutliff was now selling a match to this tobacco, and I tried some. A lot of nostalgia in those first few puffs, but,although the cut, the aroma, and the taste brought a flood of memories, not unlike Proust’s petite madeleine in a cup of tea, I found a tiny bit of a bite that was not familiar. I am going to try blending a bit of Black Kathy, in order to see if I can eliminate that bite without significantly altering the taste. A simple, old-fashioned satisfying smoke. A touch of honey over a well-done blend of mild tobaccos, but all the flavors work together to be satisfying and traditional. Like the Match far better than the original.

Love at 1st puff, and for me that is saying something. I am rather picky about aromatics. Either they are too subtle or too sweet. Troost is BALANCE. At least in my humble opinion. Not too sweet and not too bland. I highly recommend this to anyone who favors Va/Per or just Va blends. This reminds me a lot of C&D’s Bijou Cellar Series. It has the Virginia & Orientals like Bijou does. However the Black Cavendish and caramel topping (again not very sweet at all for caramel!) give just enough flavor to enhance the Virginia. One of my first tobaccos. I first tried this tobacco back in the 70s when I first started smoking a pipe. Took me a while to learn how to smoke it without it biting me too much. When I finally learned how to smoke it I fell in love with that flavor profile and room note. Still have some of the old stuff but on occasion I smoke the new. I have never had the original Troost. But, having this fresh is a nice light smoke. The topping I'm sure adds a bit of sweetness and aroma, but this mostly just taste of Burley and VAs with the Oriental weaving in and out. Can be bitey if smoked fast.
