About This Pipe Tobacco

This mixture is absolutely ideal for the evening, ergo. We borrowed the name from the diaries of Samuel Pepys, Esquire. Finest grade Virginia and Maryland type tobaccos are carefully aged and blended with Greek "Oriental" leaf and top grade Cyprian Latakia. The blend is then specially processed and additionally matured to produce a mellow, full-strength smoke with rich flavor and unique aroma.

I have been lucky enough to get a lot of Esoterica. And So To Bed is one of my favorites. I’ll admire the brand is way over hyped but it does make some great blends.

This one is a medium English blend, some say it along with Pembroke use Margate as the base blend but I’ve heard yes and no to that.

Anyway, the ale topping is unlike anything I’ve tried and I’ve have tried hundreds of blends easily. Some love it and some think it is so-so but it’s worth trying if you get a chance. I like to have a bowl every once in a while and it’s great when you want something totally different....Read More

Got lucky and found a tin of this at a local shop in Seattle, it is excellent. Was a big fan of English blends back in the day, lately I've tended more towards VA/Burley blends, but this reawakened my love of good English tobacco. It is smokey, but surprisingly light, and has a sweetness that matches most aromatics out there. If you get lucky enough to snag a tin of this, you won't be disappointed....Read More

Tin note of sweet spices, sour dark fruit and smoke. Tobacco is a shag cut of brown, dark brown and black with a little tan mixed in. Moisture content is ok. Some pipe smokers will want to dry this a bit. Burns moderately fast with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No topping detected. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of sweet smoky, spices, peaty fermented hay, wood, floral, earthy, tangy dark fruit, sugar, savory, toast, tart musty bitterness, mildly spicy, mild cocoa, an herbal sweet grassy background note, and a peppery retro. Because of the expectation, it's nothing special. Tin note: English. You may be tempted to smoke it right out of the tin. Don’t! If you do it will smoke hot right from the first light and taste like Presbyterian Reformation with a little Latakia added. Let your pinches dry out for at least 30 minutes so that some of their “special process” dissipates. Smoke delicately at an adagio cadence with pauses in between puffs.
