About This Pipe Tobacco

Open up a tin of G.L. Pease's "Gaslight" and you'll find a surprising amount of empty space, the content's mass concentrated into dark, dense plugs; rich, compactly pressed bricks of exotic fragrance and flavor, with only subtle tones of lighter, warmer colors of leaf hinted at here and there. Suffice to say that with its images of deep, cool and misty nights lit only by the faint glow of soft gas-lamp flames, master blender Pease picked a very appropriate name for this Latakia smoking mixture, easily one of his most unique and evocative creations yet.

I would not say that this is one of my go to, every day blends. However, when the mood strikes and ready for a full body, rich and satisfying smoke. This hits the spot! On a brisk fall evening or after a Hardy meal, a bowl of gaslight and a cognac or a good scotch really hits the mark! This is anything but an all-day smoke. First, it needs to be prepared carefully and allowed to dry after being sliced and rubbed out. It should be smoked slowly and will likely require several relights. The Latakia really comes through, and it has a very strong aroma… but this blend is less aggressive than Nightcap. It’s smoother, with a slight hint of banana-like sweetness. It’s quite oily and has good body on the palate. You should know what you’re getting into before buying it—this isn’t an easygoing tobacco like Westminster or My Mixture 965. When I first got this tin it was a little wet. Didn’t stay lit and wasn’t all that. BUT I tried this after cellaring for a little over a year. It was fabulous!
