;regular rotation" smoke. I prefer to really savor each bowl of Gaslight, searching each and every puff for the delicate nuances of flavor that subtly change as it's smoked. I feel that if I smoked this tobacco every day, I'd end up dulling my palette and lose my ability to appreciate less-complex tobaccos. can only be described as sea like. Right away I felt like I had made a mistake but decided to load up a bowl. As I put flame to the dark, murky, earth colored leaves that filled my pipe I was immediately awe-struck. Smoke, spice, leather, deep, dark, contemplative flavor. Immediately I was adrift in thought of walking down cobblestone streets lighted by the soft glow of gas lanterns; among horse and buggies, women in expensive hoop skirts and men in suits with top hats. The smell of chimney smoke wafting through the air intermingled with the smell of exotic spices, incense, vintage leather and the slightest smell of the musty, briny ocean water. As I entered back to reality, I retrieved my copy of the Complete Sherlock Holmes, lit a candle, poured a dram and settled in for what was one of the most relaxing, contemplative, and mysteriously wonderful evenings I have ever experienced. As a fan of the aromatic variety I was overpowered by this blend. Though I can appreciate the complexity, the Latakia is overpowering to me. As a rookie I need to refine my pallet and let this one sit a while.

ld sweetness and tang from the virginias, which, when mixed with the "still curing wallet leather" latakia, give off a strong fig/date/cranberry reduction aroma in the tin and smoked game stew along with dark fruit chutney taste in the smoke. Orientals spice it up, but this is my 3rd blend with orientals, and the only one whose smoke didn't feel/taste buttery. Just a slight peppercorny sourness.
Its a fresh tin so I will come back to this review in a few months. Definite must-try, for those who havent; a game-changing english blend that will change the way you think about english and balkan mixtures. Read Less

hanced dark tones with some Glenmorangie after clear and exhale through the nose. Hints of purple then violets-velvet on a maidens breast? Images of mummies and lilacs all at the same time. ht or two to get it going but it burns pretty nicely once it catches. The flavor is dark and at times I get hints of espresso and dark unsweetened chocolate. The tin note is very interesting. I have never smelled or tasted another tobacco quite like it. I can only give four stars at this time because I find it a little rough around the edges and get sharp notes and even though I know how to smoke and I don't inhale I don't care for the way it somehow hits me in my throat occasionally in some bowls at times throughout the smoke. I suspect this may improve quite a bit with age as my first tin was very fresh when I received it. I have some in the cellar to age and will give an update if things get even better. It's very good now and I suspect age will make it great. Read Less

notes and smoked even better. It is rich and full flavored with a good mouth feel and smoked smooth and cool. It has a rich creosote flavor that reminds me of an old greasy gas station. This blend was properly named. It also has a little smoke, little spice, a little sweet all the way to the bottom of the bowl. This has gone to the top of my rotation. at I found was an amazingly complex blend that is easy to prep and smokes easy and cool. Open it up and it smells like Lagavulin. Creosote and tarry rope. Smoky bbq. Sweet tang. Light it up and BOOM! Smoky incense notes with a plush full smoke. Satisfying notes of sandalwood and heather. Red Virginia on the end to sweeten it slightly. Lovely nicotine hit. The aroma and flavor are truly divine. er get just one or the other. Just when you think you can pick out a specific characteristic, it steps back on the next puff, and lets another step forward. The flavor is so unique it is difficult to describe. Delicious, alluring, contemplative, fun, deep, rich, elegant. These qualities become more discernible as you smoke your way down the bowl, ending in bittersweet satisfaction - you don't want it to end, it was such a good smoke. Mr Pease has recommended in an article, that it takes several bowls to get to know a good blend. I agree, especially with his Gaslight. The more I smoke it, the more I appreciate it.

Update 10/25/19: Been smoking Gaslight for a few years now. Still great. A cold weather smoke. Burns slow. Two big pinches goes a long ways. Requires several relights, mostly during the first half of the bowl. There is a learning curve to smoking this well. I've tried cutting and packing it a few different ways. And I'm not sure I've found the best way yet. Seems to smoke well in a snug chamber. Read Less

This is a very complex and tasty concoction. One of my favorite English blends. Nice Latakia and the orientals are exquisite. The Virginia has a very savory quality to it. The whole thing is unapologetically on the smoky/savory side to my palate.

ies a mystery. And he isn't exactly wrong. When you pop up the tin, you'll find three covers to the tobacco, one with literature and two clean, and underneath is two crude brownie looking kakes, with a strong, dominant and almost commanding Latakia aroma. It is nearly at perfect moisture, but to really enjoy, 10-15 minutes of drying time is not bad. Just enough to make yourself a drink or so. The kake crumbles easily and packs well and tight (if you want). And once first lit, it is a journey to behold. Nothing like I have tried. It speaks Latakia forward and foremost. No doubt about it, and yet it isn't the incense, woody, sweet or creamy Latakia in other blends, but more powerful, explicit smoky Latakia. My first taste impression was camp fire. Or a meat smoking station. Strong, pungent, however in the most delightful way. take a few puffs, or more than a few and another taste hits. This time it is of black coffee seeds, the charred ones beyond dark roast.. That rich, welcoming aroma at a barista station in an old coffeeshop. And now the feeling of a camp fire is absolutely complete. It keeps a smooth, even burn and a unified, strong flavour profile throughout the bowl. Not a dull moment and not a spiky one. definitely one of the most intriguing and interesting blends I have had. I am not sure it'll make my rotation. But I certainly enjoy it and will savor every puff of it. It has generous amount of nicotine. Wouldn't call it high, but you feel the nicotine when you start the bowl. But of course your mileage may vary on that point. My recommendation is definitely try this at least once. And then see if you'll be drawn to the light, the gaslight

n knife. Rubs out easily. Burns slow with a few more than normal relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and consistent, with notes of very woody, lots of spice, smoky, tangy lemon, floral, earth, mild bitter dark fruit, mild sweet bread, mild sour/tart and a peppery retro. was pleasantly surprised at how the taste only subtly resembled the tin note. It really is a smooth, graceful smoke that starts off rich, mellow and peppery and finishes sweet. The "barbecue" essence I mentioned carries over into the smoke for a pleasant, outdoorsy, summertime experience that is just dandy for watching a sunset. This tobacco is definitely not overrated! t's a sipping tobacco for me. Small sips or I get a spicy nose on snorkeling. It really tastes perfectly English. I appreciate that the tin was dated and the smoke was seven months old. I put six ounces in sealed jars for more aging. This is very smooth, and quite a value. Tested it again after short aging, and I thinks it tastes even smoother. Read Less

I even went so far as to order a pipe that I'm devoting to this blend (a luxury I thought pointless before Gaslight) because I smoke a lot of cavendish blends and I don't want my experience muddled. This makes me think of the strong Turkish blends Holmes would store in his Persian slipper for when he needed to mull over a challenging case in depth. I find it smokes best packed loosely. nt moisture works well with these darker tobaccos. It burns slow and even and I often get a solid hour of a single bowl.
I consider this a dessert smoke and the finest English I've ever tasted, but just like any rich dessert, it's better as an occasional treat than a daily smoke. Spark Plug is on the same flavor spectrum, but without the dense heaviness of Gaslight and more approachable on a daily basis.

tangy VA, musty and buttery Orientals and cedar-laden Latakia. There's little sweetness from the VA, but what is there is sufficient. The plug form allows one to carry this about easier than loose cut. The plug isn't terribly dense and consists of larger leaf. Be careful not to pack too tight; larger cut leaf like this requires a loose pack. The Latakia is assertive, though the VA and Oriental are in greater proportions. I would call this a Latakia bomb, in the same vbein as Pirate Kake, but slightly more VA. It does something to the back of my throat... dries it out, coats it, something I've not experienced before but similar to what others have experienced. Strong, smooth and lets you know you are smoking lat. The tin note is fruit but I dont find the fruit in the profile smoke. All in all its very good and worth every dime!

would let it dry 45 minutes to an hour, much much better. Tin note is musty, earthy, and hearty. Reminds me of the woodstove in our cabin growing up, that great smell of oak baking out its heat. It's a wonderfully nasty smell. When dried, it just needs a light packing and a char light and sometimes it smokes all the way with no re-lights needed. At its best it smokes creamy and thick. Rich flavor, very strong. Usually it's just a strong smoke that doesn't fully satisfy. It's complex, but not muddy like some Balkans that have like 5+ ingredients these days. I like that it has 3 ingredients. Flavor is earthy, hearty, with a bit of spiciness here and there. There are some things to like. The flavor is best when you get a good dose of the orientals. The latakia can be a bit much at times. The nicotine is a little too much for me, I have to smoke Gaslight later in the day or it can hit me some. I can't smoke a giant bowl, either. For me it's a solid 3/5. Now back to cellaring. It's one of those where I could just tell that at least 6 months will make it super. I'll get another tin and try my best to wait a year. Read Less

..it is intense! Primarily a Latakia powerhouse, the darker Virginia's and Orientals in this blend do make an appearance throughout the bowl but definitely play second fiddle to the Latakia. If you like lots of dark heavy Latakia, this blend is for you. The quality of tobaccos in this blend are top notch like a lot of the GL Pease blends and the pressing into cakes really melds the flavors of the tobaccos together in exquisite fashion. Some reviews have said that it is fairly strong and heavy on Latakia, while I have found it to be exceptionally and unusually savory, and very well-balanced.
It is deep, dark, and rich with a little spice. The fragrance is stunning. The smoke is voluminous. One thing I’ve never gotten from any other pipe tobacco is a taste and aroma of (get this) charcoal. And I mean distinct, grayed, ashed-over, smokey, ready to grill, Kingsford charcoal. 😂
Yet it wasn’t unpleasant at all. In fact I found it surprisingly nice, but didn’t really know what to make of it as it came and went through the bowls.
As meaty as this blend is, I expected a lengthy, creamy pleasant aftertaste, but it didn’t linger long.
Like most GLP blends, the nicotine is unfortunately strong. The first time I smoked it, I had to put it down a little more than halfway through the bowl. Subsequent bowls I’ve packed less so it isn’t an issue.
For comparison, I find Gaslight to be reminiscent of SPC’s Plum Pudding; equally round and satisfying, but far more intense on every level. It is very well developed and has a maturity about it, unlike the edgy greenness I’ve come to hate from C&D. Read Less

While Gaslight is a lovely blend, It is just so cumbersome to prepare it for the smoke. I initially found it too harsh, but after I cut it into a reasonable palpable, form it grew on me. Just wish it came in ribbon or flake.

n wet, and I tried to dry it out but perhaps the weather at the time wasn't allowing the brick to lose its moisture. That said, cutting it was a bit frustrating, even with a sharp knife. The pressed leaves would easily come lose and rip off with just a bit of pressure, so I'm not even entirely sure what a good cross section of sample of the plug would taste like. I had trouble keeping it lit, and eventually I passed it on to a friend who was willing to take on the responsibility to care for it. This is, of course, just my experience and it could have been a mechanical fluke. Oh well, there is always Quiet Nights! Read Less

nt with the Latakia being prominent. I was anxious to try it out, and so my first smoke was not ideal. The tobacco is quite moist and needs some dry time which I did not give it, so it was difficult to get my first bowl lit and to keep it lit. After I calmed down and gave the tobacco the time it needed, it was near perfect. A great smoke. The room note, I am told, is 'a bit much don't you think'. But I loved it.

irresistible” reminded me of that one girl, years ago during a week of R&R. Then the top is pulled open slightly and you stick your nose near the crack (note; I have stopped any reference to a week of R&R and am focused on the tobacco). Even with a pipe already burning it made my nose itch. Off with the top (tobacco again, no women) and there is enough paper to be a pair of Victorian ladies undies. Then, there they are two lovely little sticks with so many aromas.
Part Two – Preparing the tobacco. The first tin I opened and smoked immediately. I learned then that the blend has a lot of moisture. Now I will open a can and let it sit next to my keyboard throughout the day as I work. At around cocktail hour I will slice the tobacco and put it into a jar. I think slicing is the correct approach (across the grain obviously to maintain the blend) but this is very much a shaken not stirred argument. After a vigorous shake we are ready to get down to business. I place it on the bookshelf and retrieve a glass jar filled with last weeks opened and shaken tobacco.
Part Three- Smoking. In my mind, this is a Latakia based blend with other tobaccos added (not in percentage but in impact) I contrast this to something like Nightcap where Virginias is accented with Latakia. Don’t pack this blend tightly; gravity fill works best From first puff it was deep and complex, satisfying enough to demand I put my book down and just enjoy. I hasten to say that this for me is the ultimate positive. It is very slow-burning. Some suggest that Gaslight should be smoked in a smallish pipe. I differ; I pack a magnum and prepare to hang-on. Sweet Latakia flavors with the Oriental adding a zesty touch. I think the Virginia acts as a wall, if you will, upon which the flavor pictures of the other two tobaccos are hung.
Pluses – a wonderful tobacco to be enjoyed during contemplative times. I don’t see this as a tobacco to go fishing with or at a chess tournament.
Negatives – My wife, who is a bit of an exotic English blend herself (having been born in India under the Raj), finds this tobacco to have an offensive room note. As a reference point; she finds my Padron Anniversario maduro cigars to be pleasing, but this blend is off-putting. Hence, I am guaranteed several hours of uninterrupted me time. (Perhaps this belongs in the pluses?) I generally share my space with four fine Labradors. All have been without complaint. Read Less
