About This Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

The Kendal Mayor's Collection of pipe tobaccos honors Samuel Gawith as the former mayor of Kendal, and St. James Flake is a quintessential Virginia/Perique mixture. A renowned tobacco. After buying it, I smoked a bowl and found it just so-so, very moist. Maybe it's because I didn't let it dry long enough. People say this one needs long aging. Hopefully time will bring out a better flavor.

Most traditional full hobby partner raines from enjoyable fun player interaction in the hobby for me. So very happy I made a great collection of this great fun smoke. Most of the Gawith preparations offering requires fully immersion in the hobby as I find his products require old school techniques to fully enjoy it in the hobby. I liken it to preparing a great sauce for a great meal, so very much to consider whilst preparing this Gawith backee to enjoy the pleasure is in part playing with and through its presentation for enjoying a great smoke, much like that sauce presentation for that particular dish. I enjoy the process that actually grows the smoking pleasure experience. I am enjoying 2019 purchase from the cellar which for me being the first step in the process because for the very best pleasure time is mandated for completion of the process. In other words Gawith leaf is at its very best pleasure regulated by time in the process. Yes you can smoke it when you buy it but give it time to grow the pleasure. As a great sauce great’s best over time. Don’t ruch the pleasure or you’ll miss out on the great pleasure of this old style prepared leaf. The Best Virginia/Perique EVER

Sweet... grass, pastry, a sweet yeasty/malted raisin nuance, a slight tanginess akin to plums, caramelized sugar, coffee, even a few floral notes here and there. I don't get much black pepper from the Perique, but rather stewed fruit. The finish is clean and sweet and it leaves a decent room note, unlike many other perique mixtures. This is 'Top Shelf' pipe tobacco. Not much to add from what's already been stated; This is the pinnacle of a Virginia/Perique (VAPER). Hard to find, but worth the effort. Nicotine is 3.5 out of 5. *Update 2/20/25* Just cracked a jar cellared in 2017 (8 years). This has mellowed a lot and lost sweetness. The flavors have melded and each distinct leaf is now less pronounced. It's incredibly smooth. The Perique isn't as spicy but now exhibits a soft dark-fruit aspect; the VA is softer too but is still grassy. It has a citrusy edge, but it's minor now as compared to an unaged fresher version. I also notice the room note is softer too; more bread-like. I prefer the fresher version. If ya got it, enjoy it now. It'll mellow with age, but it'll also lose its sweetness when that sugar is fermented....Read More
