Rattray's: Macbeth 100g Pipe Tobacco

A bowl of Macbeth, a cup of joe, and you have a good start to the day. It’s a simple, light blend that works. It does burn hot, so smoke slowly. Not an all-day smoke for me, but a definite wake-up blend.

This ribbon cut blend of bright Virginia and Burley varietals from Rattray’s is a little odd, but I like it. What makes it stand out among the Rattray’s catalog is that it tastes a lot like a Lakeland tobacco. There is a faint yet noticeable topping that’s floral in nature (definitely natural in origin). For this reason, it seems as though it isn’t nearly as popular as many of the other “yellow label” blends by Rattray’s. MacBeth features the same high quality, thin ribbon cut tobaccos that you expect from Rattray’s. The cut is the same as Virginia 40, and the Virginia used is the same. Bowls burn down to a fine ash with little to no dottle; very well-behaved, and only a little potential for tongue bite. A final attribute which I love about these thin ribbon cuts from Rattray’s is that the tin is packed to the brim. There is a ton of tobacco in this little can. This is a great VA Burley make no mistake about it well worth a try.

My apologies, but there's nothing special, or extraordinary about this one. Can bite, even with slow, tamed puffing. Flavor is not even mediocre at best.

Tin aroma is fruity. I get raspberry and some dark fruits. The aroma carries over to the taste of the first few puffs but softens out. I still taste the light fruity topping into the second half . The burley and Virgina used here are if very good quality. This is made to smoke slow. The natural tobacco flavors are great but very subtle. The fruit flavors are also quite subtle and enjoyable. This tobacco has little taste on it's own . There is a topping which detracts from the taste of pure Virginia . I used my can for blending which it is good for . I'm thinking that might be it's only use but if you want a really light Virginia you might like it .

Whoever described this delicious blend got it dead-on right. It's a very simple blend that SIMPLY WORKS!! It might be the definition of an all-day smoke. And it proves that simplicity is a virtue, when it's done properly. There's a slight hint of natural sweetness in the tin aroma, and the subsequent lighting.
