About This Pipe Tobacco

A historic pipe manufacturer, Charatan was established in 1863 when Frederick Charatan began carving meerschaum pipes at his London shop. The brand eventually gained recognition as among the most prestigious pipe makers in England, with production supervised by the Charatan family until 1960, and even today, Charatan pipes are sought after on the estate market by collectors worldwide.

In honor of the brand's near 100-year prowess, Charatan pipe tobaccos revive the Charatan legacy to offer a range of elegant mixtures inspired by iconic British classics. An old-school, coin-cut blend, Rolls features flue-cured Virginias from African accompanied by Perique for an iconic, subtly sweet-and-spicy VA/Per.

I always have a keep a tin of this handy. If you love the Vaginia/Perique style and haven’t smoked this, you’re missing out. A little stronger than average, but deeper-darker notes.

The tobacco itself is high quality and flavorful. In the tin I opened, however, the coins were stacked on top of each other and stuck together such that it was impossible to separate them without shredding them. I don’t see a reason to pay a premium for a coin cut if you end up destroying the coins to get any measure of tobacco to smoke....Read More

Presentation and tin note are a solid. All the coins are completely intact. The taste is rich, sophisticated, and from the top, mid bowl, to the end is quite a treat. Got six tins, and going to buy some more right now. I see white ash in the bowl---clean burning, and deeelicious! Did a back-to-back with Chartan vs Peterson DeLuxe Navy Rolls. Both are excellent, but I rate Charatan a half star better. I smoke alot of Peterson too, so just being subjectively honest.

Tin note of hay, tart dried fruit, and spiced figs. The just under 1 1/2 inch (nearly 40mm) thin cut coins are mix or brown and light brown. Centers are dark brown and black. Moisture is on the dry side, and coins rub out effortlessly. Burns moderately with a few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild to medium and mostly consistent, with notes of spiced bread, herbal, wood, mild Rasin, moderately peppery, earth, mild leather, a sweet grass background note, and a very peppery retro. Virginia is trying to lead with Perique trying to support. Cavendish is lost somewhere. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More
