.) find a blend which has adequate complexity and strength, but will gracefully fade into the background if needed, and 4.) find a blend which really just tastes like good tobacco, instead of having a more distinctive flavour which, while excellent, bores you after 5 tins (I'm looking at you, Wessex Brown). If you are a VA smoker, don't try this--don't buy it. I don't want it to get too popular, I want all of it. It is too perfect to share.

I loved this blend about 10 years ago when the description included "turkish" and "havana". Then I bought more of it and received a tin that "red virginia slices".
This version is rather uninteresting with a sort sickly sweet smell.

ause I've used many of these words before: fruity, some earth, nutty, and grassy. The perique is present in not only the mouth feel, but also in a nice plumy flavor, the virginas are hay and sweet; and the burley adds some wonderful nuttyness that just rounds out the smoke for an incredible experience. Yes, all words I've used before, so why is this one different? I don't know! It just is! Everything works in the most amazing harmonious way. This is my desert island tobacco. ll got it right with Scottish Flake. It's a well-balanced mix of tangy Virginias with a nice bit of both plum and pepper from the perique. Too much perique gives me a lump in my throat, and if I really puff fast and hard this one can do that, but if I smoke at a normal pace it's perfect. The burley adds just the right low note to the mix, and it has just the right sweetness along with a slightly salty flavor. Just enough complexity to stay interesting but doesn't require my full attention to appreciate. The flakes did not need drying before smoking, they load well, burn slow and complete. Compared to its cousin McConnell Scottish Cake, this is more full-flavored and less sweet. (For me, the flavors in the cake are not as pronounced, and the extra sweetness overwhelms the flavors.) In my opinion, this one is just right. My only complaint is the cost per ounce is fairly high compared to other VaPers, but that won't stop me from getting some more to age. Highly recommended.
