G. L. Pease Kensington: A Good Low Nicotine Tobacco
October 19, 2025
Product: G. L. Pease Kensington 2oz
For those of us with an aversion to nicotine, finding a tobacco that both tastes good and does not have the negative effects of too much nicotine can be a difficult search. Frog Morton original and On the Town had been my go to tobaccos, but since McClelland went out of business this is no longer an option. Another good option was Hearth & Home Daybreak, but it was discontinued. I have some tins of FM stockpiled but I know they won’t last forever, so I’ve been searching for something to replace it. I tried some of Peterson’s English mixtures, but they all caused me the telltale signs of too much nicotine: mild nausea and dizziness and elevated heartrate. I came across the G.L. Pease English mixtures and tried several of them when they were on sale. Many of them seem quite low in nicotine and do not have the negative effects of nausea and dizziness I get with most tobaccos.

Although Charing Cross is my personal favorite, Kensington is also a very good low nicotine blend. It is a bit stronger flavor, more of a medium English blend. It does not seem to me to have toppings or other flavorings added, but just the flavors from the oriental and latakia tobaccos. If you’re searching for a low nicotine English tobacco blend with a medium to strong flavor I highly recommend you give Kensington a try.

**Please stop deleting honest reviews.** My first review was removed, so I am giving it again. I did not like Kensington because it has some kind of boozy apple pie casing in it. I think it is a casing, but another reviewer has described it as "obvious fruit flavor." A third reviewer has praised the fruit flavors. I don't like them, so why doesn't my voice count? I don't think it's strong enough to be called an aromatic, which is why I believe it was added as a casing. It smells like apples and cinnamon. In my opinion, it does not belong in a Balkan. This is my review, and I will keep posting it here no matter how many times it is deleted. To Smokingpipes: No, this is not an error. I intend to review Kensington. My tin is from 2021. I waited three years to open it, because three years seems to be the sweetest spot for 2oz. GL Pease tins, and I was very disappointed with the result. As always, I have jarred it, and will review it again after some time. If I like it after a month or two of whatever chemical process happens in the jar after popping the tin, I will re-review, and I will even take down my first review. **Please stop deleting honest reviews.**...Read More
FEELS LIKE HOME

Product: G. L. Pease Kensington 2oz
Look, I've dated plenty of tobacco blends—some fancy, some exotic, some that promised the world and delivered disappointment. But somehow, I always come crawling back to Kensington. It's like my comfy bluejeans of pipe tobaccos—reliable, cozy, and never judging me for wearing dress shoes. Honestly, Kensington is the standard by which I now side-eye every other English blend. I don't even know what special magic it's working, but smoking it feels annoyingly like coming home. Ugh, fine Kensington—you win. Happy now?"...Read More

Tin note of smoky, sweet fruit, and tart wine. The ribbon cut tobacco is brown, light brown and a small amount of black. tobacco is dry, no prep needed. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and consistent, with notes of earth, lemon grass, tangy spices, mild sweet dark fruit, smoky, bitter dry wood, floral, and a moderately spicy retro. Virginias is leading with Orientals supporting. Latakia is supporting from afar. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is good....Read More
Smokey & Spicey

Product: G. L. Pease Kensington 2oz
Delicious and smokey on the light up, the Cyprian Latakia and Oriental are very prominent but the bright and red Virginia quickly join in with a bready, zesty twang. I get a lot of Oriental spice on the edge of my tongue with this blend. The Oriental and Latakia kick up quite a strong smokey, spicey, woody, espresso note but never reach the smokey blast of a lat bomb. I'd call it a medium/full blend rather than light/medium....Read More
