My initial assessment of this was very positive. I thought it was perfect. But on a closer examination I find it's full of glycols and glycerine, which ruin everything. The single thing PG/VG is good for is vaping. It ruins tobacco. I had not expected to find it in a McConnell blend. Man, this is so disappointing. To have tried this stuff before everyone started using synthetic chemicals to "enhance" their blends... It must have been something quite special. Also, glycol and glycerine make everything heavier, which means the 50g tin really has less than 50g of tobacco in it. Oh, you're getting a full 50g of "product" in the tin, but a significant percentage of that weight is not tobacco. I can only imagine how good it must have been, long ago, before the synthetic revolution....Read More

One of my favorite blends, absolutely in love with this stuff. If you’d like Orientals it is a must try. Whenever it’s available whatever you do, don’t buy it. Mostly so I can buy more of it. But seriously it’s absolutely fantastic.

This is what a perfect oriental blend tastes like, smells like, etc. Absolutely enchanting! Double sublime!

This is by far my favorite tobacco. The tin note is entoxicatingly rich and the flavor when lit is every bit as good, from first puff to last.

Tin notes of sour, sweet and smoky. The mixed cut is mostly black with dark brown and a little light brown. Tobacco is soft and slightly tacky, no prep needed. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength mild to medium, nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is med and somewhat consistent with notes of smoky wood, earth, mildly sweet ripe fruit, floral and a little spicy. Oriental/Turkish is driving with Virginias riding shotgun. Cavendish and Latakia are in riding back. Room note is pleasant to tolerable and after taste is good....Read More

The aroma in the tin and Mason jar is slightly sweet and somewhat incense-like, and the taste doesn't disappear between the bowl and the mouth. It burns slowly and well, and doesn't overheat the pipe. The Cavendish is slightly sweet, the Latakia doesn't overwhelm the experience, and the Virginas hold it all together very well. The orientals and Latakia linger on in the aftertaste but in a subtle, pleasing manner. A real find and a real keeper. And it's far more available that Germain Special Latakia Flake!...Read More

When considering the many additives in pipe tobacco today, McConnell (Kohlhase Kopp), uses relatively little.
Oriental is a soft, sweet, oriental-forward English. While many may consider it a Balkan due to the ever so slightly forward nature of the Turkish, the quantity of Virginia and latakia places it squarely in the English category. The sugary Black Cavendish sweetens and softens the mixture of musty orientals, bready/yeasty virginia and smoky latakia. The latakia never screams for attention in this mixture, but rather whispers its creamy smokiness. Nicely balanced, mild flavor, mild body, low nicotine and sort of a candied English, if you will....Read More

I can't detect Latakia in this mixture so I would call it a Balkan rather than an English blend. If you like English blends but don't want a Lat bomb this might be just the stuff for you. It can be harsh if it isn't smoked very slowly but it is complex and rich if smoked properly.

I'm a big fan of Dunhill's Standard and London Mixtures, Oriental fit right in. Very nice tin note and visual appeal. Started out similar to London Mixture but with a pleasant Cavendish smoothness on the inhale and an arid Turkish note on the exhale. Transitioned to peppery Virginia for the last half of the bowl. Promises to be a great British blend for the warmer months. Burned well and provided a long cool smoke....Read More
