Irish Flake Under Another Name
January 19, 2015
Product: Rattray's Stirling Flake 50g
I wanted to try this ever since I found out that Kolhase-Kopp was releasing this under the Rattray banner aas they no longer are producing Irish Flake for Peterson. After one bowl it was apparent that this is the same (in every way) as Irish Flake - ... Read More
no difference. I maintain this while into my second tin. Irish Flake is my number one favorite and it is nice to know that it is now available as a Rattray entry.
K-H blends their flake tobaccos but sends them to Orlik for pressing/cutting. It seems that Peterson is using Orlik for their full production, start to finish, of Irish Flake. The Orlik connection seems to be the consensus after perusing many pipe smoker's forums on the web.
A great tasting flake, but unless you are enamored by the tin art, Irish Flake comes in at a better price! Read Less
One of the best I ever tasted

I think there is any comparison with the Irish flake. May be Mr.Rudolph A. smoked it in the same pipes. The flavor of the Irish Flake is very contagious. I myself smoked many tins of Irish Flake, one of may favorites. This one is approching merely th... Read More
e old English Bengal slices. Even there if there is not latakia or perique in this mixture, it gives to me a kind of oriental deep flavor of a very refined quality. It is ideal to smoke with a good strong turkish coffee or a smoky single malt scotch. Read Less
Vary Tasty & Enjoyable VA/Bur... One Of The Best

Product: Rattray's Stirling Flake 50g
As for VA/Burs, it doesn't get much better than this. Packs a good Vitamin N punch & that's what makes a blend. Strength saves $$ because you don't have to smoke as much and this provides both taste & flavor for more satisfaction. Great blend & I ... Read More
have cellared the few tins I was able to obtain. All good blends sell out quickly and this is one of them. Superb, IMHO, of course. Read Less
Great stout blend

Product: Rattray's Stirling Flake 50g
The flakes are little hard to rub out. This is an excellent blend with ample nicotine kick. One of my favorites.
Product: Rattray's Stirling Flake 50g
Tin note of tart dark fruit, peaty vegetation and sweet. Tobacco is a Flake of marbled dark brown, brown, and tan. Moisture content is ok. Some pipe smokers will want to dry it a bit. Flakes rub out with a little effort. Burns slow with few relights.... Read More
The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and very consistent, with notes of peaty sour hay, herbal floral, spicy, wood, sugar, zesty lemon grass, earth, nuts, molasses, mildly smoky, burnt toast, bitter, mildly tart citrus, cigar, savory, a spices and semi-sweet dark fruit background note, and a peppery retro. Kentucky leads most of the time with Burley and Virginias supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great. Read Less

Very similar to MacBaron HH Burley Flake. Which is also a great product.

A Nearly Sterling But Still Powerful Foil To Its Sister, Irish Flake
October 02, 2020
Product: Rattray's Stirling Flake 50g
Stirling Flake is like that very pretty, less curvaceous and less headturning sister of the spitfire, Irish Flake. The two share more than a passing resemblance, but there are differences, setting them apart, though both deserve the keen attention of... Read More
many. Stirling Flake is to me less complex, with possibly one less ingredient than her sister. Irish Flake is a slightly cheaper date, has more eye-popping curves and is far flashier with her Dark Fired Kentucky, burley and Virginias and a more powerful room note. But Stirling Flake is well-developed and complex still to an advanced degree with equal parts flue-cured, fire-cured, and air-cured, like Irish Flake. Lady Stirling doesn’t come on as strong as her more exciting and extreme sister, who is still my favorite blend. But Stirling to many might be the more viable mate. I’ve dated Irish Flake far more, but Lady Stirling might become my preference eventually, one never knows! 4.7 stars. Read Less

Product: Rattray's Stirling Flake 50g
This is Peterson Irish Flake on a lighter cleaner approach.. I prefer this to the heaviness of IF. Both are great though and are welcomed. Nice to know if one company goes under.
Beautful presentation

Product: Rattray's Stirling Flake 50g
Stirling Flake is a full bodied, deliciously balanced flake that IS strong, but much tamer than Peterson's Irish Flake. I've tried to enjoy Irish Flake. Even WANTED to enjoy it because it's clearly intended for the experienced smoker who's up to th... Read More
e challenge of that strong a blend. But time after time I found that it's a little too strong, and I had to admit defeat and forego smoking it. Stirling is my idea of a FULL flavored smoke that won't blow you away. It's dark and rich, with a touch of subtle sweetness, but it's not ALL strength. More balanced and frankly much easier to enjoy. Not for the novice, yet highly recommended. Read Less
