Samuel Gawith: Full Virginia Flake Burnt Ends 8oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-059-0096

Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake Burnt Ends is a pipe tobacco made literally from the end cuts of the blending house's celebrated Full Virginia Flake. During the blend's heat-pressing process, the ends of the tobacco become denser, caramelizing the natural sugars and marrying the flavors in a new profound way. The result is a flake that acts more like a plug providing flavors with a much more intense, smoky, aged profile with elements of fermented dark fruit and hints of earth, oak, and hay, with a touch of spice.

About Samuel Gawith Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Sweeter and More Full-Flavored than FVF

Product: Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake Burnt Ends 8oz
We often look at these pictures and are surprised when we receive the thin little 5"x7" tray. Upon opening, these literally look like smoked beef ribs. These are VERY densely pressed flakes which require rigorous prep. Note is figgy, caramelized sugar, grassy/hay, with a tiny bit of citrus rind at first. A top-shelf VA requiring a slow pace for full enjoyment. Mouth-feel is creamy, and no sharpness is detected. This is a very sweet and enjoyable product but requires numerous relights. That sweetness is comparable to the NECO wafers I had as a kid. The finish is mostly clean but coats the mouth a little, leaving a lingering sweetness. Nicotine is 3 out 5 and fairly stout....Read More

From the video (Ireland/Sykes) there are going to be “more burnt ends.” I hope they release St James Burnt ends. Sweeter than regular FvF. Can’t want until it arrives!!!

I expect it to surprise me. I just hope it can be qualitatively different from FvF, not a derivative of its failure.
Heavy prep required, enjoy slowly

Allow me to say I understand everyone’s frustration. The drop was not heavily publicized, and a lot of us were caught off guard. This is a pain I know too well. I’m trying this tobacco for the first time this morning. The flakes are quite thick, and once I’ve chopped and rubbed them, they require about 3hrs of dry time. The result is a rough cut that takes a while to get going, but the flavors are full and plentiful; to be sipped slowly. If this practice is observed, one may truly enjoy this blend. I notice a sweetness that is more present than the original FVF. They are similar, but this edition has charms that are exclusive to it. It’s certainly worth a try if you manage to get some....Read More
