About This Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake Burnt Ends is a pipe tobacco made literally from the end cuts of the blending house's celebrated Full Virginia Flake. During the blend's heat-pressing process, the ends of the tobacco become denser, caramelizing the natural sugars and marrying the flavors in a new profound way. The result is a flake that acts more like a plug providing flavors with a much more intense, smoky, aged profile with elements of fermented dark fruit and hints of earth, oak, and hay, with a touch of spice.

About Samuel Gawith Pipe Tobacco

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

I love ribs

Product: Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake Burnt Ends 8oz
These look like baby back ribs, with the shape and color. The flavor is unique, it had a vegetative quality. I took a gamble as I hadn’t tried FVF or FV plug, it paid off big time. There is no denying the quality of the leaf, a nice blend of light/dark & in between. I plan to cellar this and check on it in a few years, cheers and happy piping 💨...Read More

Part One-Taste: [I'll use my wine-related descriptions] This tobacco has a lush mouthfeel, smoky and full. Some mention "sweetness," which I do not sense; rather, with both normal and retro inhale, I find more of an umami or earthy taste with a "dollop" of hay and clover. There is some complexity; however, in the main, the taste profile, to me, is deep and earthy. (Organoleptic perception varies widely from person to person, BTW.) My overall impression is that a full Virginia that a Lat-forward English-blend lover will enjoy greatly. Part Two-Preparation and Smokability- In the video, the preparation seemed to suggest a cube cut. I tried that and felt it failed in both releasing flavor and in requiring multiple relights. I switched both the knife I used and the cut, and had excellent results. The knife? Razorback Signature with the clip point blade. First, I cut the "slab" into strips about 1/8th" wide, then I shave off flakes with the blade at a shallow angle; this yields longer flakes, which, for me, require less relighting. {NB: The foregoing is my experience. I love this formfactor, purchased both the Full Virginia and Balkan, and find the extra prep effort well worth it. And, of course-- IMHO/YMMV.}...Read More
Sweeter and More Full-Flavored than FVF

Product: Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake Burnt Ends 8oz
We often look at these pictures and are surprised when we receive the thin little 5"x7" tray. Upon opening, these literally look like smoked beef ribs. These are VERY densely pressed flakes which require rigorous prep. Note is figgy, caramelized sugar, grassy/hay, with a tiny bit of citrus rind at first. A top-shelf VA requiring a slow pace for full enjoyment. Mouth-feel is creamy, and no sharpness is detected. This is a very sweet and enjoyable product but requires numerous relights. That sweetness is comparable to the NECO wafers I had as a kid. The finish is mostly clean but coats the mouth a little, leaving a lingering sweetness. Nicotine is 3 out 5 and fairly stout....Read More

I expect it to surprise me. I just hope it can be qualitatively different from FvF, not a derivative of its failure.
