Samuel Gawith: Squadron Leader 8oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-059-0084

Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Squadron Leader from Samuel Gawith is a classic, quintessential English blend named in honor of the Royal Air Force pilots who flew Gloster Gladiator biplanes in the early days of WWII. As a pipe tobacco, Squadron Leader features Bright and Dark Virginias bcombined with Latakia and Turkish leaf for a cool, all-day English mixture.

Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 8oz
I love this. It didnt need much drying time but let it sit for an hour anyway. Its not to harsh with the orientals and the quality is excellent. I'll probably keep ordering this when I run out.
Not a Lakeland

Product: Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader 8oz
Not as much latakia as one expects from an English type blend. All components are of the highest quality, as is always the case with the Gawith companies, so there is little to complain about. Squadron Leader is tasty stuff. The Virginias are everything we want them to be, and the Orientals are sour and spicy and interesting. The Latakia is very nice too, I just wish there was more of it. If you hate lakeland, however, this is not the stuff for you. Technically, it's not a lakeland blend, but it is processed on the same equipment as their true lakeland blends, so the flavors and aromas do rub off a bit. It is not intentionally flavored/scented, but the little bit that we do find present is noticeable. I have come to enjoy it, but it's not for everyone....Read More

The can was out of stock, so I bought it instead.
There is no difference in taste and aroma.
I think Samuel Gawith's Balkan or Squadron Leader are the best for me out of all the tobacco I've ever smoked.
