About This Pipe
Jared Coles took up pipe smoking, in his own words, in the honor of his grandfather, and began to explore pipe making as a student at the University of California, Irvine in 2009. He crafted his first pipe that year with friend John Klose, with whom he would later partner to craft J&J Pipes. Jared has since struck out on his own, using lessons he's learned from the likes of Todd Johnson and Jeff Gracik.
This Billiard from Jared takes on small proportions — measuring just under four and a half inches in length and weighing less than three-quarters of an ounce — but is nonetheless a great piece of handiwork that exhibits significant attention to detail. The sandblast was done in very fine, very close waves leading up to the smooth, lightly inflated rim, and the shank extends into a small horn accent. A saddle stem of vulcanite finishes the piece, formed by sharp ridgelines and a narrow bit. The shaping is straightforward, as is the coloring for the sandblast, but it's the work Jared put into making every corner of this pipe just right, as well as its eminent portability, that make it such a great piece.
