Adam Davidson Sandblasted Apple (2021) Tobacco Pipe

Though Adam Davidson draws much influence from renowned Danish and Japanese artisans, crafting distinct Freehand-style shapes — like his Jørn Micke-inspired shapes and Figu design — his appreciation for classic designs is also well represented across his portfolio, most iconically in his signature Lorraine. This straight Apple falls more within Adam's classical shaping style, though with an adherence to compact dimensions and stout, chubby proportions often seen within American artisan pipe making, and it's similar to previous designs we've seen from Davidson in the past, with a voluptuous bowl and sturdy shank, all in a conservative finish, not unlike this earlier Workhorse Billiard.

In fact, this particular Apple is a sister pipe, of sorts, to a piece Adam carved back in November 2019. Both are compact Apples that favor muscularity and plumpness, each fitted to a sleek saddle stem to further their muscular dispositions and both dressed in similarly dark, sandblasted finishes. This piece, however, features a more slender stem base, and such a design choice adds a particularly svelte nature to this pipe, the trim, diminutive saddle portion lending a sense of refinement. Adam has accomplished similar aesthetic motifs by using a trim ring of sterling silver on a robust shape — as with this Rhodesian — but here, he forgoes the use of an accenting material, allowing the stem itself to display the same effect. Simple, minimalist, yet highly refined and handsome, this is a pipe fit for workhorse use without sacrificing eye-catching style.
