Alexander Tupitsyn: Partially Sandblasted Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-622-0101
Bent pipes from Alexander Tupitsyn often exhibit a more subtle sinuosity, gently flowing in curvature through the shank and stem. By contrast, this Dublin offers a nearly full-bent profile, offering exceptional balance and comfort when clenched. The design calls to mind the traditional Calabash, with the transition curling dramatically upward and composition founded upon the consistent arch of the underside. The bowl flares into an inflated rim whose domed aspect is accentuated by a smooth finish and walnut stain to accent the rest of the stummel's dark sandblast and echo the smooth finish of the shank face. In profile, the shape's lines are smooth and seamless, flowing elegantly from bit to rim, but in hand, subtle, accented structure in evident as Tupitsyn has fashioned ridgelines that flow through the shank and up the sides of the bowl. Those hard lines both help to define the shape's silhouette while also incorporating asymmetry to the composition: The right ridgeline lower set on the shank than the left side and extending to the far rim, while the other terminates directly at the center of the rim's left side. Furthermore, the stem's expansion ring matches that asymmetrical aesthetic, being teardrop-shaped to align with the left sides ridge. It's a mesmerizing shank that offers more and more intrigue the more its analyzed, with rippling growth rings climbing the bowl and erupting into birdseye along the rim.-Truett Smith
