About This Pipe
The Tsuge carvers that are assigned to the Ikebana pipes always seem to show a superior affinity for the egg and acorn shape, and the BC grade Ikebana before you is a fine example. The "egg" that is the bowl is perfectly shaped, and is wonderfully predictable in its regularity of reduction. In a somewhat unusual move, Tsuge elected to pair up this egg with a slender shank and tapered bit, forgoing the more often seen katachi style shank and saddle. I love the move, for it helps to not only emphasize the superlative shape of the bowl, but adds a very cool sense of the lithe to the composition.
