About This Pipe

Translating to "living flowers" in Japanese, Tsuge Ikebana is Japan's most renowned pipe-making atelier. For over a decade, it was a collaboration between three elite carvers: Kazuhiro Fukuda, Asami Kikuchi, Yoshirou Ohi. Together, they would combine their unique styles and pipe-making experience to craft distinctly Japanese interpretations of Danish shapes. Today, Asami Kikuchi is the sole carver and she carries on the marque's legacy in stride, crafting gorgeous smoking instruments such as this Tomato.

Kikuchi's style is often marked by plump, chubby shaping cues, and the Tomato is a shape inherently well-suited to this style. Though the bowl is indeed remarkably plump, Kikuchi has balanced this with a lithe, lengthy shank fashioned from bamboo. Set low in the composition, and slender in diameter, said bamboo shank keeps most of the focus on the bowl while still offering a satisfying sense of visual rhythm thanks to the three bumpy knuckles spaced evenly throughout it. The tilted, subtly flaring shoulders of the delicate saddle stem continue this visual rhythm, and all together, they promote a comfortable, relaxed smoking posture. The only hint of crispness to the bowl's round form is found at the heel, which is softly spurred. From this subtle protrusion, the underside of the bowl slants upward, tilting the bowl every so slightly for a pleasing touch of dynamism. A smooth, glossy, auburn finish preserves the integrity of the bowl's dynamic silhouette, and it perfectly accentuates the briar's stunning grain, which Kikuchi has read with unwavering skill.
