Sandblasted Cosmic Goldfish Tobacco Pipe

Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but as a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2026, the theme of our Expo is "The Art of the Sandblast," celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of the most meticulous finishing techniques in pipe making. Through the sandblast, these artisans transform the natural grain of briar into textured works of art, highlighting the unique character of each block and demonstrating the artistry of the technique.

One of two pieces Adam Davidson has presented us for 2026's Expo, this Blowfish is a member of his signature series of Cosmic pipes, and it's one that stands out readily among his others, being the first sandblasted Cosmic we've received from him. Davidson set aside a number of briar blocks for potential use with this pipe, considering those with only the best, most interesting displays of plateau, all of which he partially blasted to find the block with the nicest growth rings. Once the briar selection was finalized, Davidson began his shaping, working the burlwood into a large, organic Blowfish shape complete with myriad ridges running along its outline. The transition is tight, lifting the shank with its subtly acute trajectory, and leaves just enough space to drape a digit if desired. The shank itself is extremely broad, flowing out of the transition and expanding with a curling arc while twisting to the left, its face revealing an inverse trapezoidal shape. From this flat extreme, a series of ridges begin, with the lower two gliding through into the underside of the pipe and wrapping around the fore to form the twin panels flanking the bowl. The top pair feature the same kind of shaping, though they form a secondary panel on top of the shank that tapers from the right side to the left, before descending into the shank. The left side's arrangement of ridges create an unbroken edge flowing from top to bottom, providing something of a window for the Cosmic effect of its namesake to be viewed with the most clarity possible.

Coming in at nearly a third of a pound and measuring almost seven and a half inches long, this pipe is truly a hearty piece. As such, there's an impressive width about both the bowl and the shank that is impossible to ignore in hand, and this wealth of substance contributes to a vast and ceaselessly impressive display of grain. Treated with a crisp, earth-toned sandblast, the briar reveals dense bands of unbroken growth rings encircling the entire stummel, reaching across the bowl and shank to frame the flanks. The right flank displays a lovely pattern of textural birdseye centered on the bowl's panel, with growth rings radiating out from its central location. The treatment of the left side is decidedly more complex. As a Cosmic pipe, this piece features a huge swath of plateau, all of which has been covered with a clear resin of Davidson's proprietary formulation. Here, however, Davidson had to tweak his process a bit: shaping the briar first, and then leaving the plateau resin-free as he took the time to manually break up pure 24 Karat gold leaf until it became a fine dust, which he then carefully applied to the exposed plateau in multiple layers to create a luminous field. Once the gold dust was administered, then the resin was poured, creating a shimmering and enchanting surface that changes based on perspective and is at its most brilliant in the light. Shaped with a measured and meticulous asymmetry, this pipe has been engineered to smoke as well as possible while ensuring the resin is strong and sturdy, and that there are no thin points in the chamber since, not only is the shape asymmetric, so is the drilling. The chamber has been adjusted toward the right side of the bowl and drilled with a slight slant in that direction, with the mortise and draft also being offset slightly to accommodate the resin. Completing this piece is a lengthy stem of black vulcanite with a demure downturn at the bit, keeping the lion's share of the visual weight centered on the stummel and guiding the eye toward its expansive nebula of cosmic dust.
