About This Pipe
Ardor has its roots in Sociedade Rovera, a pipe-making firm founded in Varese, Italy, in 1911 by the four brothers Rovera. Angelo Rovera, son of Sociedade Rovera co-founder Francesco, founded Ardor in 1974 with his son Dorelio, and today the company's pipes are crafted from briar left to age for a decade. Ardor is nestled in close proximity to competitors Savinelli, Radice, Castello, and Caminetto, yet another example of the rich northern Italian practice of pipe making.
This bent Apple from Ardor is carved to provide vertical and horizontal columns for an easy grip over some craggy rustication, presided over by a smooth, flat rim. The stain of the stummel is light green, pairing well with the forest green of the acrylic stem that is matched on the face of the muscular, upturned shank. The stem has a metal accent that peeks out between the acrylic of the shank face and the acrylic sphere out of which the tapered portion of the stem stretches to the bit, but a standard tenon is still in use. The stain takes the briar in a direction seldom seen in pipe making, but Ardor's eye for color and texture will fit this piece in with any collection of fine Italian craftsmanship.
