Smooth Pickaxe (Two Hearts) (2022) Tobacco Pipe

Founded in 1974 by Fritz Becker, Becker is a family-run Italian workshop now led by third-generation artisan Federico Becker. Renowned for breaking away from the traditional, bold, Italian neoclassical style, Becker favors sleek, lightweight designs with refined proportions. One of the most distinctive features of Becker's work is the use of pointed heels, making the Pickaxe an especially fitting shape for the artisan, as the form traditionally incorporates this characteristic design element. Here, a tall bowl reminiscent of a Dublin rises confidently from a pronounced heel before giving way to a graceful shank-and-stem arrangement. The sweeping curve of the latter not only balances the composition visually but also promotes a natural, comfortable smoking posture. The contrast between the bowl's height and the slender shank and stem creates an appealing sense of dynamism and poise. Finished smooth in a light stain, the stummel showcases striking tendrils of flame grain along the bowl's flanks, while a warm cumberland stem lends a welcome touch of rich color to the composition.
