At the time, handmade briars were uncommon in Italy, but that would soon change as Castello discovered customers' desire for high-quality, handcrafted pipes. The bowl of this Poker urges forward, consequently vaulting the shank-and-stem arrangement into the air and lending the composition a strong sense of movement. The bowl's thick walls rise from the flat, sure-sitting heel to the smooth, flat rim, housing a generous chamber inside. The shank is slightly playful, with grooved, carved details that create a spiral-like effect. A long, slender, downturned stem joins the shank, its extended length and gentle curvature offering an easy smoking posture. Dressed in Castello's namesake finish, the stummel wears a vibrant auburn stain that accentuates the briar's KKKK-graded grain.
