About This Pipe

This rendition of Dunhill's "20" Cherrywood features a saddle stem, an uncommon design cue for this shape. Rendered in Group 5 size, the bowl is slightly canted, with a gently angled, flat base that allows it to sit easily on a desk. The cylindrical shaping of the bowl and its utilitarian nature is akin to its cousin, the "22" Poker, the mouthpiece being the main difference. This Cherrywood is wearing the marque's sandblasted Shell Briar finish, revealing handsome grain.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
