About This Pipe
Rendered in balanced Group 4 size, this "34" straight Brandy from Dunhill sees a pert, upright bowl posed at the fore, formed by supple walls tapering from the round, broad base toward the softened rim, the overall figure contouring well to the hand. Paired to the bowl out back is a slender shank and tapered stem, both keeping the profile sleek and streamlined. Dressed in the crisp sandblast of Dunhill's Cumberland finish, the stummel displays waves of growth rings wrapping around the fore, its earthy stain complemented by the rich tones of its eponymous stem.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
