About This Pipe
Louisianian artisan Jason Mouton first learned his way around a lathe by crafting duck calls under the instruction of his father, with whom he would fish and hunt in the bayous and marshes of their hometown, Gueydan. In 2016, Mouton purchased his first pipe, and was quickly compelled to try crafting one of his own. This curiosity snowballed into a passion for pipe making, and has since blossomed into a full-blown career. These days, Mouton is known for carving meticulously detailed takes on classic shapes, featuring full-bodied bowls and clean, sleek lines. This Devil Anse is one such example with its shapely bowl and streamlined shank-and-stem arrangement.
Often rendered in Nosewarmer proportions, the Devil Anse shape inherently centers around a full-bodied bowl, which is paired to a slender shank and stem and exhibits a prominent forward cant. This iteration from Mouton meets almost all of the aforementioned criteria, though it technically falls just outside of Nosewarmer territory, measuring nearly five inches in length. The juxtaposition of the plump, almost spherical bowl and the sleek, streamlined shank-and-stem combination strike a pleasing visual balance, and it's all unified by a dark, sophisticated color palette courtesy of the stummel's smoky sandblast and the stem's traditional jet-black coloring.
