About This Pipe

Germany-based Japanese carver Ken Dederichs draws on both Japanese and Danish pipe-making traditions, favoring organic, flowing shapes. He has a notable ability to balance stout proportions with supple curves, resulting in pipes that feel both muscular and fluid. This Shield example reflects his signature style, with a bold, eye-catching outline defined by a striking bowl featuring a ridgeline-wrapped midsection, a sharply pronounced heel, and a curved fore wall.

In addition to the ridgeline, the bowl's fore and aft are distinguished by a dual finish: the curved wall is rendered in a glossy smooth finish, while the remainder of the bowl wears a crisp, dark sandblast. A trim shank extends from the bowl and is accented by two knuckles of bright bamboo before joining a demurely curved saddle stem. The bamboo introduces a warm contrast to the otherwise dark composition, its hue complementing the birdseye-adorned, smoothly polished fore.
